What Makes This Listing Specific
For collectors comparing copies, this listing should be judged as the specific 1979 1979 Topps Wayne Gretzky card 18 and not simply as another Wayne Gretzky card. The listing provides useful identifiers including set 1979 Topps, card number 18 and manufacturer Topps.
Those identifiers matter because cards from the same player can have very different supply, collector interest and prices when the set, card number, parallel or grade changes. The listing also identifies this as a rookie issue, so confirming the exact release is especially important before using another rookie sale as a comp.
Why This Card Matters
This card has a clear place in the player's hobby story. Wayne Gretzky remains the benchmark hockey player in the hobby because of his NHL scoring records and the long standing importance of his vintage and early career cards. Topps and Bowman issues are often collected as core baseball references, so year, card number, rookie designation and exact variation matter when comparing value.
Condition Points Worth Inspecting
This copy is listed as SGC 3. The grade gives a useful shorthand, but it should not be the only thing you inspect. Check the label details, certification number, holder condition and the card itself through the plastic because eye appeal can vary between two cards with the same numeric grade.
With an older card like 1979 1979 Topps Wayne Gretzky card 18, normal age can make clean examples difficult to compare. Pay extra attention to paper loss, staining, creases, trimming concerns and signs of restoration in addition to ordinary corner and surface wear. eBay currently labels the listing condition as Graded, but the photos and grading information should carry more weight than the marketplace condition field alone.
Grading Risks for This Card
Before assuming a higher grade, inspect print registration, print dots or color defects from older production, corner rounding and edge wear from decades of handling and wax or gum staining, surface wrinkles and small creases.
What the Recent Market Shows
This listing is currently asking $965.00. Fewer than two reliable matching price points are available, so the plugin is not inventing a six month average.
Value Factors to Compare
Before deciding whether the current price is strong or expensive, compare the characteristics that can materially change what collectors are willing to pay. The current listing is asking USD 965.00, so these factors are the best starting point for checking that ask against other copies.
- The 1979 release and how much collector demand exists for that year.
- Demand for the 1979 Topps set compared with other issues of the same player.
- Whether comparable sales match card number 18.
- The SGC 3 grade and how many comparable copies are available.
- Whether collectors consistently recognize this exact release as a rookie card.
- The listed card features, especially Rookie, HOF.
Finding the Right Sales Comparisons
The cleanest way to price this card is to begin with exact matches and avoid mixing unrelated versions into the same average. For this listing, try to match year 1979, set 1979 Topps, card number 18 and grade SGC 3.
Look at several recent completed sales instead of relying on one unusually high or low transaction. A small group of close matches is normally more useful than a long list of loosely related cards. Compare the current USD 965.00 ask with that matched group rather than with a broad search for every Wayne Gretzky card.
Simple Summary of the eBay Description
The seller says this card has a SGC 3 grade. The seller says this card is from 1979. It is card number 18.
Where This Card Can Fit in a Collection
A collector building a focused Wayne Gretzky collection can use the exact year and set to decide whether this card fills a missing release, grade or parallel. The 1979 Topps set gives this copy a clear place to compare against other cards from the same product.
Before buying, decide whether you want the exact card shown, the best condition you can afford, or simply one representative copy. That decision can keep you from paying a premium for a grade, parallel or feature that does not matter to your collection. If your goal is a rookie collection, verify that the exact 1979 1979 Topps Wayne Gretzky card 18 fits the rookie definition you use for your collection.
Buying Notes for This Card
The listing gives us a few useful card details. Sport is listed as Hockey and features include Rookie, HOF. The safest comparison is with sold copies that match both the card and the grade. I would also verify the certification number before making a decision. The rookie designation is worth checking against the exact release. The year, set and card number are the best details to confirm before buying.
Buying With Future Resale in Mind
If you may resell 1979 1979 Topps Wayne Gretzky card 18 later, save the purchase record and keep the card protected from new wear. Clear documentation makes it easier to describe exactly what you own when you create a future listing. For this graded copy, keeping the certification number with your records also makes future verification easier.
A strong resale listing should make the card easy to identify. Include the exact release details, honest condition information and enough photos for a buyer to judge corners, edges, centering and surface. The current listing is from seller just_collect with feedback shown as 100.0% positive, 96,361 feedback, which gives you one example of how the card is being presented today. The current buying format is Buy It Now, so remember that auction results and fixed asking prices are not directly interchangeable when you review future comps.
