Understanding This Exact Card
The important starting point with this listing is its exact identity: 1990 91 Upper Deck Wayne Gretzky card S. The listing provides useful identifiers including set 1990 91 Upper Deck, card number S and manufacturer Topps.
Matching those details before checking prices helps avoid comparing this card with a different release that only looks similar in a search result. The listing also identifies this as a rookie issue, so confirming the exact release is especially important before using another rookie sale as a comp.
What Could Hold Back the Grade
The main grade pressure points to inspect on this kind of card are centering from the original factory cut, print spots, lines or surface scratches and corner wear that can keep an otherwise clean card out of the top grade.
For numeric context, PSA publishes an approximate PSA 10 centering tolerance of 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse. PSA describes a Mint 9 as centered no worse than 60/40, so a small centering shift can be enough to separate a 9 from a 10 even before surface, corner and edge flaws are considered.
PSA grading standards. Population figures change as additional cards are graded.
Condition Points Worth Inspecting
For a raw copy, zoom in on the front and back photos before buying. Check centering, all four corners, edge wear, surface scratches, print lines, dents and any marks that may be hard to see in a single photo. Ask for additional images when an important area is hidden by glare or a sleeve.
For a modern card, inspect glossy surfaces carefully because scratches, dimples, print lines and small edge defects can be easier to miss in listing photos. Chrome style and foil finishes can show flaws differently depending on lighting. eBay currently labels the listing condition as Used, but the photos and grading information should carry more weight than the marketplace condition field alone.
Why Collectors Care About This Card
This issue matters because both the subject and the set affect how collectors compare it. Wayne Gretzky remains the benchmark hockey player in the hobby because of his NHL scoring records and the long standing importance of his vintage and early career cards. Upper Deck has a long place in modern sports card history, and exact year, card number and insert or parallel status are important when comparing copies.

Building a Useful Comp Set
When researching a Wayne Gretzky card, start narrow and widen the search only when exact matches are scarce. For this listing, try to match set 1990 91 Upper Deck, card number S and similar raw condition.
Look at several recent completed sales instead of relying on one unusually high or low transaction. A small group of close matches is normally more useful than a long list of loosely related cards. Compare the current USD 702.64 ask with that matched group rather than with a broad search for every Wayne Gretzky card.
Who Might Collect This Card
How much this card matters to a collection depends on the goal. A player collector may value the release differently from a set builder or someone assembling a run of graded copies. The 1990 91 Upper Deck set gives this copy a clear place to compare against other cards from the same product.
Before buying, decide whether you want the exact card shown, the best condition you can afford, or simply one representative copy. That decision can keep you from paying a premium for a grade, parallel or feature that does not matter to your collection. If your goal is a rookie collection, verify that the exact 1990 91 Upper Deck Wayne Gretzky card S fits the rookie definition you use for your collection.
